Attention Liberals, 11 million Iraqis would like to dispute what you've been saying.
Despite all you've done to bash President Bush and denigrate the service of our soldiers, Iraq successfully held its third elections yesterday. Very little violence. Overwhelming participation. Even the Sunnis got involved this time!
Still think that what is happening over there is a "lie?" Still think we were wrong to go in there and remove a brutal dictator and liberate millions of Iraqis?
Well, maybe you should listen to this:
"Anybody who doesn't appreciate what America has done and President Bush, let them go to hell."
– Iraqi Citizen, voter Betty Dawisha (see video here)
Sounds like Mephistopheles will be hosting next year's DNC convention.
It really is a shame they can't unite with the rest of the country and just enjoy the fact that America is winning and freedom is expanding in Iraq. Victor Davis Hanson calls our progress "Lancing The Boil." (h/t: Flopping Aces, Michelle Malkin)
For the last three years we have seen a carbuncle swell as the old Vietnam War opposition rematerialized, with Michael Moore, the Hollywood elite, and Cindy Sheehan scaring the daylights out of the Democratic establishment that either pandered to or triangulated around their crazy rhetoric. The size of the Islamicist/Baathist insurrection caught the United States for a time off guard, as was true also of the sudden vehement slurs from our erstwhile allies in Europe, Canada, and Asia. Few anticipated that the turmoil Iraq would force the Syrians out of Lebanon, the Libyans to give up their WMDs, and the Egyptians to hold elections — and that all the killing, acrimony, and furor over these developments would begin to engulf the Middle East and threaten the old order.
In the face of that growing ulcer of discontent, we quietly kept on killing terrorists, promoting elections in Iraq, pressuring Arab autocracies to democratize, and growing the economy. All that is finally lancing the boil, here and abroad — and what was in there all along is now slowly oozing out, making the cure seem almost as gross as the malady.
Ex-Donkey made some excellent observations about the "ooze" from the Left:
So apparently the historical election in Iraq doesn't warrant an editorial in the NY Times or the WaPo. Pathetic.
Generally speaking, the Liberal side of the blogosphere is pretty quiet as well. (Note: SoCalPundit updated this post to reflect the Left's vitriolic response to Iraq's elections)
But Decision '08 has a round-up of the Top Ten Kos Kidz' reactions. One of my favorites:"This is just theater. All completely meaningless, and woe to the suckers who buy into this BS."Bitterness. It's all-consuming, isn't it?
Speaking of bitter, read this "unbiased" report from ABC about yesterday's elections: President Bush hailed Thursday's voting in Iraq as "a major milestone" in establishing a democratic ally for the United States in the Middle East and moving toward the day when American troops can come home.
The appearance of a buoyant Bush in the Oval Office alongside six smiling young Iraqis displaying purple-stained fingers was an attempt to capitalize on any positive news in Iraq.
If anything, Bush has been guilty of NOT capitalizing on the positive news from Iraq. Which is why Murtha, Kerry, Moore, Sheehan and the rest of the America-bashers have managed to monopolize the public discourse on the war. (h/t: Flopping Aces)
Antimedia wrote one of the best columns I've seen about the vote. I'm just included some excerpts. Go read the whole thing here.
Three times this year the Iraqis have voted. Three times this year the Iraqis have defied the terrorists. Three times this year the Iraqis have defied the haters and the murderers. Three times the Iraqis have stared death in the face and not backed down. Three times. Three times!
Do you understand what that means? Do you have any idea what they have done? Do you realize what courage it took to march to the polls when you knew that you could be murdered? How many times have you voluntarily gone somewhere that you knew wasn't safe? Where you could lose your life and you knew it? Yet you went anyway. How many times? The Iraqis have done it three times!
Two years ago they could have died simply for complaining about their government. Two years ago they could have been ground up in a wood chopper simply for not voting for Saddam. Two years ago they had no hope, no life, no future. Nothing but desparation.
Today they have freedom. Today they have elected their own government, one of their choice, reflecting their hopes, their dreams and their beliefs. It took courage well beyond the average, but they did it anyway.
When those who say we have no business helping other countries, we should remind them of the Iraqis. When people tell us that some people don't want freedom, we should show them the purple fingers of proof that they are wrong. When our children ask us why our military men and women had to die in Iraq, we should introduce them to our new Iraqi friends. When the weak-willed tell us the sacrifice isn't worth it, we should point out the Iraqis.
