On a day which means so much to me, I find it unusually hard this year to write the words to adequately express my feeling of gratitude toward all the American soldiers who have fallen in defense of our freedom. Blackfive, however, put it quite succinctly.
From the War of Independence to the War on Terror, from the open field to battles away from publicity's light -- remember this day all who have made the ultimate sacrifice, for freedom is never free.Take a moment away from today's celebrations, put your hand over your heart, and whisper a prayer of thanks for the men and women who fought and gave their lives so that we can remain free today.

Several others blogging the real reason for today's holiday...
Flopping Aces gives a history of the holiday as well as a brief overview of the conflicts whose soldiers we salute.
Mudville Gazette has a stirring tribute to those American heroes who fell in Vietnam. Senator Bob Dole did an admirable job of commemorating their sacrifice in his 2002 speech at the National Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
LaShawn has some current reflections on Memorial Day.
Wizbang and Michelle Malkin have good roundups of many other blogs who remember today's true purpose.
OpfFor has my favorite: President Reagan's tribute to the soldiers of WW2, given on Omaha Beach in 1984.
