House votes to surrender to al Qaeda

“Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it”
– George Santayana

One wouldn't think that Americans would be so stupid as to make the same mistakes we made in Vietnam, but apparently the Democrats (and four Republicans) want to surrender and hand Iraq over to al Qaeda.

AP: The House measure passed 223-201 in the Democratic-controlled chamber despite a veto threat from President Bush, who has ruled out any change in war policy before September.
...
To his critics — including an increasing number of Republicans — [President Bush] said bluntly, "I don't think Congress ought to be running the war. I think they ought to be funding the troops."

Democrats saw it differently.

A few hours after Bush's remarks, Democratic leaders engineered passage of legislation requiring the withdrawal of U.S. combat troops to begin within 120 days, and to be completed by April 1, 2008.
April Fools' Day, how appropriate.

Captain Ed asks an obvious question about the Dems' behavior:
They send Petraeus to Iraq when he clearly states his intention to conduct a large-scale counterinsurgency strategy, they hold up his funding, and just when he gets all of the troops he requested, they try to pull the rug out from underneath him. Given that the military benchmarks have largely been met at this point, why does Congress want to stop now? Could it be success they really fear?
